How to Choose Pet Health Insurance

According to Pet Insurance Review, the cost of veterinary care has risen 70% in the past 5 years. No wonder many pet owners are choosing pet insurance. But before you choose, spend some time researching. Pet insurances vary depending on the pet and the plan.

Instructions

1
  • Pet insurance policies are different from human insurance policies when looking at the claim process. With pet insurance, you pay the veterinary and then fill out your own claim form for reimbursement.

  • 2

Pet insurance policies are similar to human insurance policies when looking at the factors of deductibles, co-pays, annual premiums, benefits covered, and caps.

  • 3

Most pet insurance policies have breeder specific exclusions and pre-existing conditions. If you have an older dog, you may not be able to purchase insurance because of pre-existing conditions. And since some breeds have specific hereditary conditions, insurance may not be an option.

When looking for a pet insurance, check out the plans. Some offer basic coverage for routine care; others offer emergency coverage and nothing else. Some plans offer routine care, emergency and even kennel fees. I have placed a link at the bottom of the page from Pet Insurance Review that compares different plans.

When comparing insurances, look for the coverage, deductibles, pre-existing conditions, specific hereditary conditions, amount of coverage after the deductible (80%-100%), maximum yearly benefit, and maximum incident benefit.

  • 6

Once you find an insurance and plan, call the company and see how helpful they are. This initial communication will help you decide if you can work with them. Ask your veterinary for a recommendation.
